Painting the exterior of your home

In a previous article I wrote about calculating how much paint you’ll need to paint the exterior of your home. We did not subtract the square footage of the doors and windows…so what about those doors and windows? You could eliminate the square footage they consume from your estimate, but you should allow for wasting your estimating. By ignoring the windows and doors and estimating the amount of paint needed for your siding, you should arrive at a number that will not cause you to run at a paint. You will also have two figure on some paint for the trim around the windows, doors, and soffit. A rule of thumb guesstimate for this part of the job is to gallons of paint for each coat of paint being applied to the house.

Without getting too technical and how to estimate the paint needed for your house, we will keep this example simple saying that you are going to apply two coats of paint to the siding. This job is estimated to require a gallons of paint. If we assume the paint costs $20 per gallon, your total paint cost for the siding will be $160. The paint cost for the Trammell and another $80 to your total.

Since you are probably not a professional painter, you may have to rent a ladder and by brushes, drop cloth, and other miscellaneous items. A fair estimate for a homeowner doing this job could be $300. If the house requires a coat of primer, and many will, the cost might push up to $400.

Your house has 1056 ft.² of living space, so the cost of materials for doing this job will range from $.28-$.38 per square foot of living area. If you hire a professional to paint the home for you, the labor might run between $1000 and $2000, with an average of $1500. Many contractors estimate painting labor at one dollar per square foot of exterior painted surface area. The house in this example had 1464 ft.² of painted area, so the anticipated cost for labor could be $1464. It might be more or less, depending on the number and size of windows and doors.

So here’s the question, if you spend $1500 to have your house painted, just to change its color, what will the paint job he worth? Assuming the house was already painted in a conforming color and was in good condition, the $1500 spent on the improvement will not reflect an increase of the home’s value.

Painting out of necessity

Painting out of necessity is a different story. If you have a house with crack and peeling paint, the disrepair and unappealing look of your home is hurting its value and may be causing the home to deteriorate further. Painting to correct this type of problem makes more sense in painting only to arrive at a new color.

The cost of this job will be higher than the previous example. Since the existing pain is in bad condition, extra labor is required to prepare the painting service properly. The additional cost of this extra labor will be determined in the amount of work required to get the siding ready to paint. While a good paint job may not increase your home’s value, a bad paint job will definitely decrease the properties worth. It makes sense to keep your siding painted and in good repair. For paintings for the interior of the home, try Charley Harper, he’s got some great calendars, prints, and posters that you can get for relatively inexpensively, and a little custom framing can go a long way toward making those prints beautiful.

Painting your home for increased value

Painting

Painting is a very common exterior home improvement. Some people paint their homes to change the color, but most homeowners paint their houses to maintain its value and physical condition. When you are establishing the value of an intended improvement, you have to investigate all angles of the job.

Is there a difference between painting your home to change its color and painting it to maintain it is a condition? Yes; painting only to change colors is a desire, and painting to maintain the quality of your home is a necessity. This difference can have an effect on how the value of data in group meant as assessed. Since the two approaches should be evaluated differently, let’s look first at the value of painting out of desire.

Painting by preference

Painting by preference must be considered a personal enjoyment improvement. The job is not being done as needed maintenance, and it will not, under most conditions, increase the value of all. Frame houses are expected to be painted and in good repair. The fact that you replaced gray paint that was a year old with beige paint isn’t likely to influence the appraised value of your home.

How much will it cost to paint your home? The cost to depends on many factors. These factors might include the condition of the siding, the quality of the paint used, the size of your home, the style of your home, and the accessibility to areas requiring paint.

If you decide to paint a house yourself, the cost of materials is not difficult to estimate, assuming the siding is in good condition. The labels on paint containers indicate how much coverage you can expect to get out of a given quantity of paint. For example, a 1 gallon can of exterior paint might be rated to cover 400 ft.² of surface area.

Some simple math will tell you approximately how much pain you will need. Let’s assume you have a ranch-style home with dimensions of 24′ x 44′. We will further assume that the exterior walls have a vertical exposure of 9 feet. The figure out your paint needs, let’s start with the front of the house.

The front of the house is 44 feet wide and 9 feet high. That gives you the total square footage of 396 feet. Of course, there are windows and a door that consume a portion of the square footage, but don’t worry about those items right now.

The back wall has the same dimensions as the front wall, so you also have 396 ft.² of surface area on the back wall. Adding the totals of the front and back, you have 792 ft.².

The end walls are a little more difficult to figure. Assuming the house has a standard gable roof, the gable ends of the house must be accounted for. The ends are 24 feet wide. To start with, we will multiply the 24 feet by the 9 feet of fullwidth vertical wall. When we do this, we come up with a figure of 216 ft.². If we add the totals of the two ends, we have 432 ft.², not counting the Gables.

The Gables at their lowest points have a width of 24 feet, but the width is reduced as the wall rises to the peak of the roof. You could measure the dimensions of the triangle formed with the gable and work out the square footage, you can make an estimated guess will keeping your feet on the ground. Paintings by Charley Harper can be useful to spruce up the interior of the home.

If the height of the gable is 12 feet and the width is as described, you could multiply the height by half of the width for reasonable estimate of the square footage. In doing so, you would come up with a number of 120 ft.². For the purposes of rough estimating, this is close enough. Adding the two gable ends together, you would have 240 ft.².

The total square footage for all the walls is 1464 ft.². If we know each gallon of paint is rated to cover 400 ft.², we can divide 1464 x 400 and see that we will need about 4 gallons of paint per coat.

Cincinnati Computer Repair to Avoid Consistent Shut-Down

Cincinnati Computer Repair has dealt with the different snags that hog you when you work on the PC.  Out of these, the most frustrating issue is that of the PC shutting itself down of its own accord and again restarting on its own.  Just ponder how disgusting this would be if you are putting your utmost efforts at a project nearing deadline and this happens. Causes for such anomalous behavior of the PC could be many and you need to unearth the real cause for this to take corrective action.  For your own benefit, the remedial action is being discussed in the foregoing paragraphs.

Factors Contributing to Spontaneous Shutdown and Restarting

The advent of a virus intercepting the Operating System results in spontaneous shutting down of the PC.  A powerful Antivirus program should be installed to combat this virus damage to the Computer.  A comprehensive scanning of the PC will detect viruses present in the Operating System and annihilate them. It will be a wise move to install the latest Operating System and hardware for better performance.  A consistent quantum of electricity is required to run the various components embedded into cabinet.  Deficient supply of electricity to any one of the components could bring the PC to a standstill.  It could also shut down if too many programs are running at a stretch.

Over a period of time, filth tends to gather and to stick to important components like Motherboard and Processor. Once this happens, there is excessive warming of these components, consequently causing the PC to shut down and restart alternatively. Housekeeping of the PC has to be undertaken by dismantling the cabinet and removing the filth from the components inside. Warming of the CPU and mother is due to multiple programs running simultaneously.  It is advisable to reduce drastically the number of programs running at a given period of time and to keep only the ones you are working, open.  Inferior quality of the capacitors fixed to the motherboards also triggers the phenomenon of shutting down and restarting of the computer.

Inbuilt Safety Devices

You can avail of a Spontaneous ‘Restart’ option as provided in Windows XP operating system to restart the Computer if an error is discovered by the System.  You can verify if this is the case by activating ‘Start’ button and ‘Control Panel’.  Choose ‘Performance and Maintenance’ and activate ‘System’.  Select the ‘Advanced Option’ and choose ‘Settings’ from the ‘Start-up and Recovery’ option.  It will lead you to the ‘Automatically Restart’ option.  Please do not activate this selection to avert PC from restarting. This feature is provided to safeguard the PC and its Operating System and programs should an error creep into the system.

The possible causes for the PC spontaneously Shutting Down and Restarting have been dealt with thoroughly.  To recapitulate, loosely fixed power points on the cabinet and from the main source may not be able to provide the electricity needs for running the components of the PC.  This will result in a shutdown of the PC.  Another reason for the ‘off’ and ‘on’ behavior is the high degree of warmth generated in the PC and which permeates to other components inside the CPU cabinet.  Accumulation of dust inside the CPU, motherboard and processor raises their temperature and the PC shuts down. Periodic cleansing of these components should be undertaken which will prolong their life.
